With the fall rolling in, you might think your chances to spend time outside and by the water are coming to an end. But fortunately, you would be mistaken. Long Island is filled with beautiful towns on the water, with Oyster Bay being no exception. For the 36th year in a row, Oyster Bay is hosting their famous Oyster Festival, that needs to be checked out.
Oyster Bay Oyster Festival
This October 19 and 20 will be this year’s 36th Annual Oyster Festival in Oyster Bay. This free event is the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival attracting more than 150,000 attendees every year. The festival spans three football field sized areas and four blocks. It is a project created by the Oyster Bay Rotary Club and is funded by the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund. It was first started to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt’s 125th birthday, who was born in Oyster Bay.
There is a great mixture of things to do at this year’s Oyster Festival. In addition to the main stage with great performances, amusement rides and arts and crafts, you’ll have live entertainment, tall ships, talented artisans, pirate shows, midway rides, and the iconic oyster eating and shucking contest. You’ll also find a food court filled with volunteer chefs and culinary experts cooking and serving dozens of clam concoctions that need to be tried. All of the proceeds from the food go directly to 25 different participating local charities.
If you think you’re done with the festival and your day is over, you’d be mistaken. Once you see the entire Oyster Festival you can branch out and explore the rest of the town next. There are plenty of historical places to see, such as:
- Sagamore Hill
- Raynham Hall
- Historical Society
- Railroad Museum
- 20th Century Cycles
- Art Show
Then, you can even check out the Collector Car Showcase and Car Show. From 9a.m. to 4p.m., you can watch the car owners compete for prestigious awards, experience some craft vendors and browse the food stands available.
If you’re looking for something fun to do, make sure to check out the Oyster Festival. You’ll experience fun activities, have a great time with friends, see some cars and eat delicious food. Even if you’ve been to the festival before, they are constantly updating it and making great additions, so make sure you visit.
