Although New York City is known for having some of the best theatre and performing arts, Long Island’s arts scene is also worth noting. You don’t need to venture all the way into New York City to see a play, there are plenty of playhouses on Long Island where you can enjoy some high-quality entertainment. Located in Port Jefferson, this playhouse was founded in 1969 and produces six productions a year on their main stage. This includes three musicals, two plays and its acclaimed production of “A Christmas Carol”. On separate stages they also have one-act show face offs, all student productions, improv shows and a dramatic academy for ages six to adults. No matter your age, Theatre Three will have something for everyone.

This nonprofit playhouse in Bellport, which is the longest running professional theatre on Long Island, is another great place to visit and see a play. The Gateway only works with the best of the best, whether it be their actors, musicians, technicians or other staff members. Most people either come from Broadway or will go to Broadway after they leave The Gateway Playhouse. 3. Patchogue Theatre

With 854 orchestra seats and 252 balcony seats, this theatre has been the center of the Patchogue community for more than 90 years. Originally a movie theatre and a playhouse, three local business men bought it and revamped it, in December 1996 to be a theatre for only the performing arts. With a state-of-the-art, world class sound system and Broadway caliber lighting and rigging, it’s a no brainer that Patchogue Theatre is one of the best places you can see some of the best plays on Long Island.
