By the time the Academy Awards rolls around every year, most people either don’t know or forget about half of the nominated films. This year’s show will highlight critically-acclaimed movies like “La La Land” and “Hidden Figures.” Check out this Oscars 2017 nominations preview and try to see as many as you can in theaters before the big day.

What to Watch for at the Oscars 2017

La La Land

When the Oscars 2017 nominations were released on January 24, the film “La La Land” tied “All About Eve” and “Titanic” for the most nominations of all time with a total of 14.

This rom-com musical stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a musician and actress who fall in love through song across the streets of Los Angeles.

The film’s major nominations include:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Damien Chazelle)
  • Best Actor (Ryan Gosling)
  • Best Actress (Emma Stone)
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography

At the Golden Globes, the film won in every category in which it was nominated and walked away with a record-breaking seven awards. Even the movie’s original soundtrack is one of the best-selling albums out right now.

Look for “La La Land” to be the big winner at this upcoming Academy Awards. But first, catch it in a theater near you.

Manchester by the Sea

This year’s breakout film, “Manchester by the Sea,” stars Casey Affleck, who plays an ordinary Massachusetts man who receives custody of his nephew after his brother’s sudden death. Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges also star in integral roles.

This heartfelt drama dazzled audiences nationwide, which led to six total nominations in the following categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Kenneth Lonergan)
  • Best Actor (Casey Affleck)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Lucas Hedges)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams)

“Manchester by the Sea” was an emotional roller coaster and, above all, a moving cinematic journey.

Hacksaw Ridge

Under the direction of Mel Gibson, “Hacksaw Ridge” tells the emotional real-life story of Desmond T. Doss who was a conscientious objector of war, but saved over 75 men at Okinawa, the deadliest battle of World War II.

This unbelievable film was nominated for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Mel Gibson)
  • Best Actor (Andrew Garfield)

Not only is it masterfully put together, “Hacksaw Ridge” is also an important story about an American patriot and World War II veteran that everyone would benefit from seeing.

Hidden Figures

There were also some surprises at this year’s nomination ceremony. Fan favorite, “Hidden Figures,” defied expectations and experts’ predictions by breaking through with three nominations.

“Hidden Figures” tells the previously untold story of the contributions of three African-American women mathematicians to launching the first man into space during the 1960s.

The three women are played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. It also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali and Jim Parsons. The film’s nominations for the 2017 Oscars are for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer)
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
