New York Distilleries

When most people think of New York’s alcohol scene, the first thing that comes to mind is Long Island’s immaculate wine country or blossoming beer scene. However, what many people don’t realize is that there are a ton of New York distilleries producing some of the area’s best spirits and liquors. In fact, here are some top local distilleries to look out for.

Long Island Spirits

Located in the heart of the North Fork’s wine country, Baiting Hollow’s Long Island Spirits is the area’s first distiller since the 1800s. From the early 1900s through a complete renovation, Long Island Spirits has stood as one of the area’s most historic distilleries, even serving as a hot spot during Prohibition.

With over 5,000 acres of potato farms, Long Island Spirits uses 650-liter, custom-made copper pot stills for distillation. Not to mention, every one of their signature batches is distilled three times. What results is a vast array of beautiful hand-crafted spirits, such as:

  • LiV Vodka
  • Deepwells Botanical Dry Gin
  • Rough Rider Straight Bourbon Whisky
  • Pine Barrens Cherrywood Smoked Malt
  • Sorbetta

To try some of the tasty spirits from this New York distillery first-hand, visit their scenic tasting room with sweeping view of the entire farm. It is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Saturdays when it is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

New York Distilling Company

Brooklyn has a long history of distilleries dating back to the 1700s. Even during Prohibition, Brooklyn is said to have been home to thousands of illegal stills. Since then, Brooklyn hasn’t had much distillery success, at least until the New York Distilling Company opened in Williamsburg.

Since its grand opening, the New York Distilling Company has come out with a fine line of delicious local spirits. Instead of a tasting room, the distillery is attached to a full-service bar where you can try their entire line of liquors, such as:

  • Dorothy Parker American Gin
  • Perry’s Tot Navy Strength Gin
  • Mister Katz’s Rock & Rye
  • Chief Gowanus New Netherland Gin
  • Ragtime Rye American Straight Whiskey

Besides, they offer several complimentary distillery tours every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30, 3:30 and 5:00 p.m.

Tirado Distillery

Located in the Bronx, Tirado Distillery is a boutique distillery that utilizes organic New York corn to craft their whiskey products. Fusing old and new, Tirado unites the traditional moonshining techniques of the south with the mellowing techniques of the Caribbean and a bit of modern science.

  • Tirado Double Gold
  • Tirado El Caribe
  • Tirado Moonshine

Visit the Bronx Whiskey Room at this New York distillery to try them all for yourself. It is open from Wednesday to Saturday, from 5 to 9 p.m.

New York distilleries aren’t nearly as prevalent as they used to be. However, these three locations are still doing it right!
