Here in America, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May and honors all of the fallen men and women of the U.S. military. It also happens to be the symbolic end of spring and beginning of the summer season. So, in order to properly celebrate the holiday weekend, here are some of the top Memorial Day events in our area.
The Top Memorial Day Events of 2018
Bethpage Air Show
Everyone on Long Island knows that the Bethpage Air Show is one of the biggest Memorial Day events of the weekend. The air show will take place on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh.
What to Expect
While the air show is going on, you can relax on the beach, walk along the boardwalk, fish or even catch up on some mini-golf and shuffleboard. The options at Jones Beach are endless. However, whatever you do, you’ll be able to spot incredible military aircrafts, such as:
- S. Navy Blue Angels
- 106th Air National Guard Rescue Wing
- B-17 Yankee Lady
- Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds
- F-22 Raptor
- Golden Knights

For a little live music to go along with the Memorial Day celebrations, KJ Farrells, located in the heart of Bellmore village, is the place to be! On Memorial Day weekend, there will be incredible live performances from local musicians. Decoration Day at Old Bethpage Village Restoration
If you’ve never been to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Memorial Day weekend is as good of a time as any. On Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., they will be hosting their annual Decoration Day celebration in remembrance of all those who died for our nation.
Besides touring the village and its historic collection of colonial homes, there will also be old-fashioned craft demonstrations for the children. Not to mention, Old Bethpage will be putting on a huge brass band concert to accompany a ceremony and parade at 2:15 p.m.
If you stop by around 11 a.m., you can catch an old time baseball game where the players wear nineteenth century vintage uniforms and play by the rules and customs of 1864.
