Within at least the past ten years, the United States has experienced what some would call a ‘Beer Renaissance’. Aside from the obvious big name beer brands, craft breweries, coined “microbreweries,” have started popping up all over the place, ushering in a wave of great tasting, independently-owned beer companies. In recent years, craft breweries in our own backyard have become known for their quality flavor and innovative brewing techniques. Visit some of these Long Island breweries that are doing beer the right way.
The Best Long Island Breweries on the Scene
Montauk Brewing Co.
Since 2012, Montauk Brewing Co. has been consistently producing top-notch beers for New York State all the way from Montauk. The brews they create are as characteristic as the summer vibe of their taproom. Come down and try drafts ranging from their signature Driftwood Ale, to their Offland IPA, to the irresistible Arrowhead Red Ale. These beers are as beachy as the town from which they hail. With that in mind, visit their taproom this summer and enjoy one of their superiorly made beers.
Come out to Queens and head to Finback Brewery to try some expertly crafted draughts in their state-of-the-art tasting room. Indulge in one of their many twelve beers on tap like their namesake, the Finback IPA, or the Red Shift, a uniquely made American sour ale. Besides providing a great hangout spot for any visiting customer, they also have a barrel aging room and a sour/funky beer room that you just can’t find anywhere else.
Crooked Ladder Brewing Company
Big things are happening at Crooked Ladder Brewing Company out in Riverhead. The taproom is located right on Main Street. During the summer, their huge open-bay doors instill a warm, inviting atmosphere. Right now on tap, they have beers like their Sorachi Pale Ale and Nitro Oatmeal Cream Stout. You can buy them by the pint, flight, growler, or keg. Crooked Ladder’s tap room really is a haven for craft beer lovers of any kind.
Black Forest Brew Haus
Black Forest Brew Haus of Farmingdale is the perfect place for those who prefer their homestyle German fare with a good beer. They brew a pilsner, amber ale, hefeweizen, and two IPAs on premises, all made according to old-time German brewing patterns. As for the food, they have traditional favorites like potato pancakes, schnitzel, and sauerbraten. Where else can you find a brewery offering delicious German food and quality beer?
Moustache Brewing Company
Crafting beers as eccentric as its name, Moustache Brewing Company in Riverhead makes only the freshest and smoothest drafts, available all across Long Island and in their taproom (which is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). They have ales of all varieties, including their flagship Sailor Mouth IPA, Everyman’s Porter, Milk + Honey Brown Ale, and the seasonal NoFoRoCo Coffee Porter.
