Halloween is right around the corner. If you’re anything like us, you procrastinate choosing a costume until the very last second and it’s usually never even that good. With costumes sold out practically everywhere and Party City lines out the door, it’s time to rummage around the house, get a little creative, and put your crafting skills to work. Here are some great homemade Halloween costumes that are perfect for kids and adults.

What You’ll Need for Amazing Homemade Halloween Costumes

Rosie the Riveter

Ladies, channel your inner girl power this Halloween by dressing up as one of America’s favorite cultural icons, Rosie the Riveter. You know the classic image: a working girl in a red bandana, making a muscle with the call to action, “We Can Do It!” You can imitate her signature look with:

  • Jeans
  • Red bandana
  • Denim shirt (sleeves rolled up past the elbow)


Shock your Halloween party by dressing up as one of the ocean’s most electric creatures, the jellyfish.

  • First, you’ll need an umbrella.
  • Then, attach materials like string, ribbon or fabric all around the edge of the umbrella to serve as the feelers.

You’ll be able to float around the party, just try not to sting anyone!


Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Kowabunga, dudes; this costume is going to be a good one! Bring back one of your favorite childhood cartoons by dressing up as your favorite crime-fighting, pizza-eating, sewer-dwelling turtles. Become any of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all you need to do is:

  • Wear all green
  • Put a color band over your eyes
  • Spray paint a disposable aluminum baking tray for the shell

If anything, it’s a great excuse to eat pizza all night!

Mario and Luigi

If you want become the most famous brothers in video game history, you must find a partner first. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Overalls
  • White gloves
  • Green shirt
  • Red shirt
  • Train hats
  • Fake mustaches

If you really want to sell the look, ride around in a go-kart all day.


Little Red Riding Hood

For a Little Red Riding Hood costume, you’ll need:

  • Black dress
  • Red cape with a hood
  • Basket

Just make sure you look out for the big, bad wolf!

101 Dalmatians

101 might be a stretch; but to become the 101 Dalmatians, get a few friends together and:

  • Wear matching all-white outfits
  • Paint black spots all over your clothes and face accordingly

Hopefully you don’t come across anyone dressed as Cruella de Vil.

For this homemade Halloween costume, you can wear whatever you want. Just make sure you:

  • Have a large sheet of white poster paper
  • Draw out your Facebook profile on it
  • Cut a hole where your profile picture would go
  • Stick your head in it

You can bet that everyone is going to like it.


A ghost is the quintessential homemade Halloween costume. Scare your friends by:

  • Cutting eye holes out of a white blanket or sheet
  • Draping it over yourself
  • Saying “Boo” a bunch
