But first, what is Oktoberfest?
History of Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is a result of the Crown Prince Ludwig marrying Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The couple invited the people of Munich, Germany to celebrate festivities on the fields in front of the gates of the city. The festivities lasted a couple days and ended with horse races with the royal family in attendance. The family decided to host another party the next year in 1811, but this time there were small beer stands that quickly grew into beer tents, carousels and fun.
Since then, Oktoberfest has been celebrated in Munich and all over the world, including right here on Long Island.

T.J. Finley’s Public House of Bay Shore is hosting its 8th Annual Oktoberfest on Sept. 18 from 3-9 pm. The traditional Oktoberfest beer tent will be there along with German authentic music! Plattduetsche Park Ompahfest
Plattduetsche has connections to German-American heritage since the 1800s after a group called, Plattduetsche Volkfest Vereen of Brooklyn came together to support each other and their families. After moving the group out onto Long Island, it became the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant and Biergarten. Now, Plattduetsche welcomes all to celebrate the authenticity of German culture with Ompahfest. On Sept. 20 from 11 am to 10 pm, come by for tons of music bands right from Germany, including Egerlaender Gold and Musikverein Moehringen. Try authentic cuisine and the finest German beer. There’s games, raffles, vendors and a rifle range, just like the old school Oktoberfest.
