This November 24, families and friends will gather to celebrate Thanksgiving Day by watching football and enjoying delicious food. However, did you know that the night before is consistently one of the country’s most dangerous times for drunk driving? It’s so important to stay safe, especially during the holidays, so make sure to call a taxi on Thanksgiving Eve.

Thanksgiving Eve: The Biggest Drinking Night of the Year

Big Wednesday

To most people, the night before Thanksgiving is spent at local neighborhood bars catching up with old friends. Unfortunately though, with so many people out drinking, there’s always going to be a fair share of drunk-driving related accidents.

Drunk driving peaks every year during the holiday season, usually with a spike in accidents around Thanksgiving. According to Progressive Insurance, drunk driving statistics around Thanksgiving Eve are unusually sobering. Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving Eve, there is a:

  • 24 percent increase in rear-end and parking-related accidents
  • 17 percent rise in collision claims
  • 14 percent surge in property damage

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 301 people killed in car accidents on Thanksgiving weekend in 2013. In 2014, 11 people died on Thanksgiving weekend in New York State alone.

When there are more cars on the road, there’s inevitably going to be more accidents. AAA reports that approximately 44 million people will travel over 50 miles on Thanksgiving weekend. That leaves a lot of room for failure, so remember to stay safe this holiday.
