For many of us, Labor Day is the unofficial end of the summer season. Since everyone has Monday off and many children are back in the full swing of school immediately after, Labor Day Weekend is usually packed with fun events and activities from start to finish, especially on Long Island. So, if you’re looking for the perfect way to spend the holiday with your family and friends, here are a few worthy options for you to choose from.
How to Spend Labor Day Weekend 2017 on Long Island
Freeport Farmer’s Market
Americans typically spend every night of Labor Day Weekend at a backyard barbeque. However, for this year’s festivities, avoid the long lines and hassle of the supermarkets and head out to the Freeport Farmer’s Market for fresh, tasty groceries and every ingredient you could possibly need.
What to Expect
Saturday, September 2 will actually be the last day that the farmer’s market, which takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is located on the Nautical Mile in the parking lot of 314 Woodcleft Avenue. Afterwards, until October 28, it can be found at the Freeport Recreation Center during the same hours.
Besides plenty of delicious eats and homemade goods, there will also be a Dance Explosion presentation, which will include styles like jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and more, on the September 2 date. Come see first-hand why Freeport is home to one of Long Island’s most underrated farmer’s markets.
Cirque du Soleil: OVO
NYCB Live is the new home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. Conveniently, it’s also where you can attend a string of shows presented by the magical, mesmerizing Cirque du Soleil in their newest show, OVO. From August 30 to September 3, they will be playing the following seven shows:

OVO, which translates to “egg” in Portuguese, features performers as insects in a vibrant ecosystem where they “eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.” The show includes 50 performing artists from 12 countries and a Flying Act that will leave you speechless.

28th Annual Robert McAvoy Labor Day Five Mile Run
The 28th Annual Robert McAvoy Labor Day Five Mile Run will take place on Monday, September 4 at 8 a.m. in Long Beach. This five mile course is fast, but mainly flat, and usually isn’t difficult for even the most basic runners.
