New York Cosmos

Last season, the New York Cosmos brought the North American Soccer League Championship home to Long Island as they beat the Ottawa Fury 3-2 and reached seventh heaven—they became champions for the seventh time. All Island Transportation has decided to write a blog in honor of the Hempstead-based Soccer Bowl victors as we excitedly anticipate what will no doubt be another standout season!

The 2016 Season Begins

The Cosmos’ preseason begins on Saturday, February 20 with an international friendly match against the Ararat Yerevan Football Club, an Armenian Premier League team. After three more matches against the Fresno Fuego, the San Jose Earthquakes and the Charleston Battery—all of which are away—the regular season kicks off.

In their return to Long Island on April 3, the Cosmos take on the other 2015 Soccer Bowl contender, the Ottawa Fury for an opening day match. The Cosmos will play 10 matches during the 2016 Spring Season, five on the road and five at home, taking on each team once. The Fall Season, which begins on July 2, consists of 22 games—11 at home and 11 on the road.

2016 Predictions for the New York Cosmos

Despite the retirement of two seasoned veterans, Brazilian midfielder Marcos Senna and the legendary Real Madrid forward Raúl González Blanco, hopes remain high for the New York Cosmos in 2016. Goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer and Mineola’s own Carlos Mendes will be returning for the season. Younger players to be on the watch for include midfielder Sebastian Guenzatti, who was the fourth-highest goal scorer on the team in 2015, and David Diosa, a 23-year old forward who has gained a bit of experience in the NASL now.

As lovers of all things Long Island, we place our faith in the defending champs. All Island predicts that the New York Cosmos will be repeat NASL champions for the first time since the 1977 and 1978 seasons!
